AID BANK AWARDS LIBRARY FAIR AND DEBATE PARTICIPANTS

Roseau Dominica, Thursday 28th May, 2015: On Monday 18th May 2015, the AID Bank presented winning prizes to four Dominica State College (DSC) students who took part in a debate competition that formed part of a scaled-down version of the annual International College Fair.

The event, which was held in November 2014, was co-sponsored by the Bank and the Library and Information Services Division of the Government of Dominica.

The students debated the topic ‘Be it resolved that single gender schools outperform co-education schools with respect to academic performance.”  The opposing team, comprising Crege Laronde and Kerym Registe, won the debate.

Senior Manager Information Systems, Avril Coipel presented laptops to winners, while Librarian II and EducationUSA Advisor Renita Charles, presented tablets to the runners-up Khamisha James and Devon Brewster.  Julian Brewster accepted on behalf of his son.

In his welcome remarks at the prize-giving ceremony, the AID Bank’s General Manager Julius Corbett appealed to the students to “use these tools to enhance your studies.” This sentiment was echoed by Mrs. Coipel who gave closing remarks.

Ayeola George, Administrative Assistant in the Corporate Affairs Department, represented the Bank at the Library’s Mini College Fair and Debate where she also served as a judge. She encouraged the Library in its efforts to stage such an event with “a lot of potential” and encouraged greater collaboration with the Ministry of Education and other relevant parties to enhance this worthwhile activity.

Ms. George further requested the library’s consideration of topics with a socio economic development slant that “challenge the students’ intellect;” that are “forward thinking” and can “influence decision makers.”

The students expressed appreciation for the prizes received and similar remarks of gratitude were made by their Mentor and Advisor Mr. Joel Challenger.

The Students are members of the Literary and Debating Society of the DSC which was established in September 2009.  To date over 100 students have been a part of the Society.
